Tai Mo Shan was Launched on St. Georges Day 1933

Designed by H.S. Rowse, one of the founders of the Royal Navy Sailing Association (RNSA) as a three-quarter rigged ketch, Tai Mo Shan was launched on St. George’s Day 1933 in Hong Kong.

The boat was commissioned by four young Royal Navy submariners and a naval doctor – Lt Sherwood, 32, Lt George Salt, 24, Lt Philip Francis, 24, Surgeon Lt Ommaney-Davis, 27, and sailing-master Lt R.E.D. "Red" Ryder, 24.

The five officers sailed Tai Mo Shan 16,217 across the Northern Pacific to Dartmouth, England, without an engine. After arriving in England, Tai Mo Shan joined the yacht Amaryllis under the burgee of the Royal Navy Sailing Association and enjoyed a distinguished racing career. The RNSA still awards an annual Tai Mo Shan tankard.
